Works for Me Wednesday - Holidays

Wow. My Menu Plan Monday was my 100th post! Yipee.

So as I mentioned in my Menu Plan I would be talking about Holiday schedules with the families. I know everyone has a different agenda for what you do for the holidays - just as we do. What works for us is this:

The Saturday before Christmas we go to my mom & step-dads to celebrate with both her side and his side of the family. This is a potluck dinner where my mom makes turkey and ham and everyone else brings the sides and dessert. We do a gift exchange (each person who wants to participate brings a gift) and hang out together. Santa has come in the past and gives a small gift (provided by my mom & step-dad -- grandparents). They give money into an account for each of the grandkids that they keep and put into for each birthday and Christmas.

This year the Sunday evening before Christmas we will go to my husbands dads house for a potluck and gift exchange. The last time we were able to get together was 2 years ago and they threw a huge party -- this time we are keeping it more low key (which I think is better).

On Christmas Eve we started the tradition last year of letting the girls open one gift on Christmas Eve at our house - it is a pair of matching PJ's. We take them to Nana's to put on before we head home and then they are matching for Christmas morning pictures.

Christmas Eve afternoon/evening we always spend at my husbands mom's house. Through the years the gift giving arrangement has changed from a gift for everyone to name drawing and gifts for all the kids, to a name exchange for just the kids, to this year no gifts at all. We are simply getting together for fun, food and family games, to start the evening off we always tell the story of Jesus' birth to remember the reason we are all together. We bring a potluck of appetizers and nibble thoughout the evening.
Then finally, Christmas morning we spend at our house with just us and our kids. In general I work on Christmas (I am a nurse and work PM shift so it is not a big deal to work that day) but I am off this year -- so we get to spend the day relaxing. We do head to his mom's house to see what Santa brought over there.

Wow... what a long description that was! Well that is what works for us. Find out what works for others at Rocks in my Dryer.

Stay tuned for how our Tahoe trip went and pictures - will try to post tomorrow.

We like to stay home on Christmas day, too. The Saturday before Christmas is spent with aunts, uncles and cousins. We rotate the host every year. Christmas Eve is with the in-laws and then to our church for Christmas Eve service.

We started doing that after we had our 2nd child. It's good to start your own traditions.

Thanks for stopping by. I enjoyed checking out your blog.

We visit with family the weekend before Christmas, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and the weekend after Christmas! Whew. We are worn out by New Year's.

Anyway, you mentioned on my blog about the paint used for the handprint balls and I used a regular acryclic paint. I didn't do anything to preserve it after that but now that I think about it, it would probably be a good idea.

Have a great holiday!
