So yesterday I hinted about what I would be talking about today in my Tackle it Tuesday post.
I posted a picture of our pantry.. here is another one (shows the upper shelf also)
With all this food I was having a hard time figuring out what we use and how often we use it. So I started dating the cans/bottles/boxes when I purchased them. For example:
So.... even though they have a use by (or best by) date on them I know when I bought them. For instance I just used a can of corn from 1/07 - means I know we are not using as much corn as I thought we would - we try to keep at least 3 months worth of food on hand and our goal is more like a year.
Having the dates on them helps me see if I need to buy more.. take for instance the canned fruit cocktail - the one I opened the other day was dated 4/08 - I know that we need to keep a bigger stock of that on hand.
When I use something that has a recent date (with in the last year) it goes on the grocery list for the next time it is on sale - so I can restock what we have used. If it is dated longer ago than a year then I generally leave it off the list until we are getting low on it (2-3 cans left) - unless of course we just are not using that product any longer!
Okay... enough of that. It works for us. See what works for others at Rocks in My Dryer.

that's a great idea. i just recently started stock piling and am already seeing that some of the food that i purchase isn't getting used much.
